Meet the Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the Month for December 2018, Katie M.

Before moving to Philadelphia earlier this year, Katie had spent much of her time earning a living by making a difference. She has made a lasting impression on the Philly Temps Team by being professional, polite and positive and we are excited to get to know her a little better.

 Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area? 

Katie M. (KM): I have lived in Philadelphia for four months–I moved here from Boston in August.

 PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

KM:  My background is in the nonprofit sector, where I worked on issues from climate change to homelessness. My most recent full-time position was as the membership and resource development manager for an international association of private funders dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness.

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps? 

KM:  I learned about Philly Temps through a good ol’ google search.

PT: Please share your most memorable experience working for Philly Temps.

KM:  I’m not sure I have a particular experience to point to (too many to choose from), but Philly Temps’ remarkable responsiveness and constant communication has made them really stand out in my eyes.

PT: What are your long-term career goals?

KM:   I would love to eventually work in philanthropy. I have been lucky to have the opportunity to spend a lot of time learning from incredible grantmakers from across the US and beyond. It is a dream of mine to one day work for a foundation that is dedicated to using their funds in creative, catalytic ways to create systemic change.

PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

 KM:  Outside of work, I love to read, paint, and garden.

PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

KM:  Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

 That’s how he got to work in data entry for a company making change, That’s how he worked at convention helping Exhibitors connect with new clients, that’s how he got to be a secret shopper for a real estate company trying to impress investors, that’s how he got to welcome University Freshman starting their educational journey and that’s how he got to be the Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the Month for November 2018.

Joseph’s positive attitude and willingness to accept new concepts is not only impressive, it’s contagious. Everyone who has worked with him has ended their day with a smile and a feeling that anything is possible.

We can not thank Joseph enough for his flexibility, his professionalism and his dedication to a job well done.

We also thank for him for answering some questions that let us get to know him a little better.

 Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area?

Joseph S. (JS): I have lived in Philadelphia for two years.

PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

JS: Prior to Philly Temps, I worked primarily at Target, snagging whatever temp work I could on the side.

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps?

JS:  I found out about Philly Temps through a quick Google search.

PT:  Please share your most memorable experience working for Philly Temps.

JS:  The convention in the Philadelphia Convention Center last year was highly memorable. I got to learn a lot about several companies and aid in their networking.

 PT: What are your long-term career goals?

 JS:  I would like to have a steady career in literature or music. Whichever one fights its way to the top and proves itself ready.

PT:  What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

JS:  I write science fiction stories and songs for my band, go on hikes, and play video games.

PT:  What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

JS: My advice would be to open yourself up as wide as you can for the opportunities that present themselves to you, and be persistent—the best is yet to come.

Flo Knows Philly!

We are considering giving the Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the Month for October 2018 a dictionary instead of a gift card because we don’t think that Flo S.  knows what ‘retired’ means.

Flo’s career in hospitality took her to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Charlotte and Atlantic City and eventually to Philadelphia where her Sales and Marketing skills were put to good use at the Holiday Inn at 18th and Market (Now the Sonesta) .

Though Flo has lived here for only 25 years, few people know Philadelphia better and even fewer take Flo 300x211 - Flo Knows Philly!advantage of all the city has to offer. Her love for the city makes her the ideal fit for the Convention and  Visitors Bureau Booth.  Not only can Flo recommend the best places to eat, sight see and learn, but she has the connections (and the tenacity) to get visitors a seat at the table. She also has a gift for making people feel welcome to our city, probably because no matter where they are from, chances are good that Flo has visited and had a good time. There is no one she can not talk to and nothing she can not talk about.

 As eager as Flo is to work, she still has to squeeze us in between yoga, continued education classes, theater, concerts, any event involving art and, perhaps most important to her, travel with her family.

 

When asked what advice she would give prospective Candidates who want to work with Philly Temps she said, “Go for it, as each assignment is a new learning experience. Take the knowledge into the next level you reach for”.

Whatever assignment Flo takes, The Democratic National Convention, The World Meeting of Families (The Pope’s Visit) or even session monitoring a small meeting in a boutique hotel, she performs with verve, class and dignity and that is why she is our Employee of the Month for October 2018.

Jim W. is the Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the Month for September 2018 and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

Since retiring from the Philadelphia Fire Department, Jim has split his time between The Jersey Shore,The Daytona

International Speedway and the Philly Temps Convention Services Team.  We can not speak for Florida, but when Jim is Supervising an Event for Philly Temps, his laid-back demeanor sets a tone that keeps both clients and staff calm, cool and content. Jim is truly unflappable in a business that has a constant potential for flap.

This South Philly Woman gets the job done

It is not that we haven’t wanted to send our Employee of the Month for August 2018 on more assignments, it’s that Elise R. does so well our clients don’t want her to leave.     IMG 0892 3 195x300 - This South Philly Woman gets the job done

Since graduating from West Chester University, Elise has built a solid resume of customer service. Always being the first face the public saw, and always exceeding expectations.

Beyond being bright, articulate and having a willingness to get the job done, Elise’s positive attitude is palpable. That cheerful disposition and infectious smile lift the energy of any space she is in.

Elise has actually worked assignments right here in the Philly Temps offices, and her performance solidified to us what our clients had told us, Elise is one of the best.

Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area?

Elise R (ER): I was born and raised in South Philadelphia and continue to live here.

PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

ER: My work experience prior to working with Philly Temps was primarily in customer service.

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps?

ER: I was recommended to Philly Temps at a career fair in South Philadelphia.

PT: Please share your most memorable experience working for Philly Temps.

ER: My most memorable experience working for Philly Temps was my time working at the Philly Temps office.  It allowed me to see firsthand just how hard they work for, and how dedicated they are, to their temp employees.

I also enjoyed my time at a travel agency, it was so much fun.   And I just love my current position!

PT: What are your long-term career goals?

ER: I hope to grow within a company I am employed with and contribute to its success.

PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

ER: I love to spend time with family and friends.  I also enjoy trying new restaurants and going out dancing.

PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

ER: My advice would be to give your all to each position you are lucky to get.  Treat it as if it is your permanent job because you never know where each opportunity can lead to.

A Smile is Just The Beginning

Behind that smile put a positive attitude, a great work ethic, intelligence and a kind spirit and you have the Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the month for July 2018 Keisha D.

Conference Registration, Session Scanner/Monitor, Materials Distribution, CME Station Clerk, Keisha has done it all and more. She has a knack for absorbing information and being able to answer event specific questions before our clients have shared everything. And most importantly, Keisha never seems to get flustered or overwhelmed by the crowd’s at large events. 

Maybe that’s because Keisha (and her Twin brother Kevin) were literfam 300x201 - A Smile is Just The Beginningally raised at Special Events. Their Mother, Terrie is the Assistant Director at The AIDS Fund and her children have been helping her at events for years. They are so dedicated that it is still challenging to get them to work for us on a day when Gay Bingo is scheduled. (We don’t even ask when its AIDS Walk weekend.)

Thank You Keisha for keeping it Up Beat, keeping it Professional and keeping it Fun. You’re such a positive force that it was challenge to find a photo where one of your coworkers was NOT smiling because of you.

We can not wait to see what the future holds for you.

Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area? 

Keisha D. (KD) I have lived if Philadelphia all my life.   

PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

KD: Prior to Philly Temps I wasn’t working. I was a high school student advancing to a college student. 

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps? KD: I heard about Philly Temps from my Mom’s boss. (PT: Thanks to your Mom we have a photo from the day you were hired.)

KD: I find that all the conventions I did were memorable depending on the people who were working with me.

KD: My long-term career goal is to be a Graphic Designer or an Artist in general. I mean I can’t be an Art Major for nothing 

PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

KD: Well I am an art major so I tend to draw a lot when I’m in the mood. Got to get in the habit to draw more to be honest.

PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

KD: Please have the best attitude when doing your work. Also, smile as much as you can, until your face hurts. If you don’t feel like smiling, too bad. Keep that massive grin on your face until your shift is over. Oh and clients like afro puffs

There’s an Art to being the Employee of the Month

Say yes to meeting Ryan F., The Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the Month for June 2018.

Ryan started his career with Philly Temps Fresh out of college and weather he is helping at Conventions or taking Administrative assignments, he has always been a real stand out.IMG 5266 169x300 - There's an Art to being the Employee of the Month

Always the professional but never giving up his artistic expression, Ryan has proven time and again that a good attitude is a great way to start each task.

Thank you Ryan, and Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us.

Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area? 

Ryan F (RF): I’ve lived in Philadelphia on-and-off since moving here for graduate studies at the Tyler School of Art in 2010, with stints in New York City and Massachusetts in between. I recently moved back in March. 

 PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

RF: Prior to working for Philly Temps, I worked in art museums, most recently in NYC. I also participated in an artist residency at MASS MoCA this past winter. In my younger years, I worked a variety of jobs from UPS to Chipotle. All have taught me valuable lessons in interesting ways, especially how to make really good guacamole:

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps? 

RF: I first discovered Philly Temps through a Google search shortly after graduating from Tyler. Upon moving back to the Philadelphia area recently, I reached out again and was fortunate to have some good opportunities open for me. 

PT: Please share your most memorable experience working for Philly Temps.

RF: As a life-long NBA fan, I’d have to say working Dr. J Night at the Wells Fargo Center was the most memorable so far. There was a large group of us who laid down commemorative t-shirts on every seat in the arena from the nosebleeds to the luxury boxes down to courtside. We took a lot of steps and had a lot of fun! (Hey Ryan, We have a photo of that team)

PT: What are your long-term career goals?

RF: At the end of the day, I’m an artist, so, making a living off of selling my art work would be amazing. That being said, we all know the tale of the starving artist. I come from humble beginnings so have always had traditional jobs and have enjoyed the sociability and camaraderie that they bring, opposed to being alone in the studio. I am really enjoying working through Philly Temps, in a space where I can use my creative thinking to hopefully better the work environments I am in. My current role involves editing, data entry, image scanning, and a lot of attention-to-detail; very left and right brain, which feels great!

PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

RF: As mentioned, I am an NBA enthusiast and an artist. I like to work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, clothing, and music. 

 

 

PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

RF: Say yes to every opportunity you can and do all the little things right. As simple as it sounds; be on time, follow the dress code, be friendly, and be open to learning new things. I’ve learned a lot and met so many interesting people through Philly Temps; not only fellow temps and supervisors, but clients, and guests at events. See yourself as an ambassador to Philadelphia. Embrace being part of a great team and trust the process!

The Philly Temps & Perm Employee of the Month for February 2018 is Zachary A.

Zachary came to Philly Temps not too long after receiving his B.A. in Sociology & Anthropology from Swarthmore College. He managed to work a variety of jobs while in school creating a resume that made us want to know more.

We knew from his first assignment, assisting with the Freshman registration and check in at a local University, that Zachary was not going to be ‘on the market for long’. Shortly after that he was chosen by one of our long term clients for a special project and within weeks that client offered Zachary a full time position.

We met with Zachary to find out more about this exemplary young man. (We also love his advice to potential candidates. Words to live by)

 

Philly Temps (PT):  How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area?

Zachary A. (ZA): I’ve lived in West Philadelphia since I graduated from Swarthmore College in 2017.

PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

ZA: Before Philly Temps I had a bunch of jobs at my alma mater, where I worked in the Admissions Office, Student Affairs, and (briefly) the library.

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps?

ZA: I come from a long line of temps (my mother was a temp, and my grandmother before her), so they recommended me contact an agency nearby. Philly Temps has an incredibly Google-able name.

PT: What are your long-term career goals?

ZA:  In the not-so-far future I’d like to start graduate school in Anthropology or American Studies, and hopefully find a university position somewhere in the Philadelphia area. If that doesn’t work out, I’ll always have temping to fall back on!

PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

ZA: Outside of work I love to cook, read, and play guitar. I’m working on my 2018 reading list, which currently features a lot of Lorrie Moore, Colson Whitehead, and as many ghost stories as I can get my hands on.

PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

ZA: My biggest piece of advice for prospective temps is to approach every assignment as if it’s your new permanent position. It’s never bad to put your best foot forward and be proactive by looking for work around the office in your down time and learning as much as you can about whatever industry you find yourself in.

After 6 years and 35 assignments, it is high time we recognized Rene B. for representing Philly Temps & Perm as well as each of the clients she has worked with, so well.

Rene is not only professional and eager to perform each task given to the best of her ability, she remains pleasant and upbeat under any circumstance. We can actually hear the smile in her voice when we call her for an assignment.

Our clients have shared nothing but praise for Rene, and we are proud to have her part of our Temp Family.

We recently had the chance to get to know Rene a little better.

Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area?

Rene B (RB): I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA

PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?

RB: After graduating high school, I was employed in the banking industry and moved on to employment with Bell of Pennsylvania from 1970. My positions while employed at Bell of PA were clerical and I was promoted to a management position from which I retired in 1996.  After retirement, I worked in my church as well as a full-time Caregiver for Mother and Sister.

PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps?

RB: Learned of Philly Temps through internet while looking for temp agencies to supplement income while Caregiving.  Philly Temp allowed me to work around my schedule which was perfect for me at that time.

PT: Please share your most memorable experience working for Philly Temps.

RB: In May, 2017, I was assigned to LightFair International Trade Show & Conference held at the Philadelphia Convention Center.  My position was as Administrative Assistant to Vice President.  This was a fun but challenging assignment.  Over 600 exhibits were on display and my tasks were to help staff set up Show Office to receive exhibitors, guests and company upper management. This was a fast-paced assignment and much of my time was spent alone in the Show Office.  Knowing how to handle irate exhibitors, frustrated attendees who stopped into the Show Office with various problem situations, a staff who had requests and expected quick results were a big part of the day.    My previous experiences with Philly Temp prepared me to meet the challenge of this assignment with confidence that it would be a win-win.  Also working as a Registration Rep could also be demanding but enjoyable.  Presently, my position at Salus University, as an Administrative Assistant is very rewarding.

PT: What are your long-term career goals?

RB: My long-term career goals are to continue with Philly Temps with the great assignments.  As a retiree, I enjoy keeping in touch with the business world, meeting new people, learning new things and staying active technology.  Philly Temps allows me to do that.

PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

RB: I enjoy travel out of state and country.  I try to take one big trip each year.  I enjoy trail walking and bike riding.  My favorite music is Jazz – especially outdoor Jazz concerts.

PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?

RB: Develop a strong positive work ethic.  Be consistently on time.  Command your present skills while learning new skills.  Dress professionally from head-to-toe.  Give respect to earn respect.  Own each assignment – as if it were your own personal business.  You want each day to be a successful day!!

The first Employee of the Month for 2017

Shining a spotlight on our Employee of the month for January 2017 is a challenge as she is constantly on the move.

Since joining the Philly Temps & Perm team in April of 2016, Abeni has been seen at the airport making sure the Olympic Ping Pong teams were getting from gate to hotels, at Dilworth Plaza supervising a street team of Kilt wearing grouses, and at countless hotels during the Democratic National Convention where she was instrumental in making sure that delegates and visitors got around our city without issue. Abeni did all of this as well as taking on projects for Law Firms, Insurance Companies and helping keep a Theater Box office organized.
Philly Temps deals with such diverse types of businesses, we need people like Abeni who remain calm, productive and forward thinking under any circumstance and in any environment. Abeni is our Employee of the Month as she does it all with a smile that lets you know the job will get done.
We recently checked in with Abeni so that we could get to know here a little better.
Philly Temps (PT): How long have you lived in the Philadelphia, PA area?
Abeni C. (AC) I was born in Philadelphia, raised in South Jersey and returned in 2012 after almost 20 years.
 
PT: How did you hear about Philly Temps?
AC:  I found Philly Temps in an internet search
 
PT: Please share your most memorable experience working for Philly Temps.
AC:  DNC (Democratic National Convention) 2016!  Working for the client to ensure that local transportation ran smoothly for the delegates was challenging, exciting, and fun.
 
PT: What was your work experience prior to working with Philly Temps?
AC:  In my most recent position, I was employed by the Smithsonian Institution, and worked with a small team to create professional development events for science educators across the country.
 
PT:  What are your long term career goals?
AC: I’m still figuring out exactly what I’d like to do when I grow up.
 
PT: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
AC: Knitting and reading
PT: What advice can you give to prospective candidates that want to work with Philly Temps?
AC: Philly Temps really knows how to make their employees feel supported and valuable, and I love working with them.  My advice would be to make every assignment count.  Whether the job lasts for 2 days or 2 months–you’re an important part of helping the client maintain their daily operations.  Your skills, your enthusiasm, and your flexibility will always be appreciated!
