Helping The University of Pennsylvania Freshmen Student Move-In!

August 24th, 2015

Philly Temps was proud to help the Incoming Freshman move into their dorms for the third year in a row.
Is it work? It sure is!! But it is all about the people, and we couldn’t be prouder of the staff this year! They GOT IT DONE!

Our event staff proved once again, that when you come together as a team, anything can be accomplished. It is also worth mentioning that not everyone can pull off Neon Yellow with such style.

Thank you University of Pennsylvania class of 2020 for giving us the privilege of helping you start your journey and thank you to the hardest working team of event staff out there today!

Check out more pictures of our staff one our Facebook page!!

Tips for Temps – The Follow Up Phone Call

August 1st, 2013

The phones rings often here at Philly Temps. People calling to see what we staff for (full time office support primarily; we also provide part-time as needed customer service and event work,) clients calling with jobs, registered temps calling in with their availability, workers on assignment, and people following up on their application. The follow up phone call is about a quarter of the total calls we answer every day. With that in mind, I want to give all of our applicants some tips to make the most of their phone calls to and from Philly Temps, or with any temp agency. In fact, many of these guidelines hold true for all job seekers, regardless if they are contacting an agency or a business.

We try very hard to get resumes entered into the system as swiftly as possible, usually within 3 business days. We also try to ensure that every applicant gets an email confirmation. Philly Temps understands how stressful the job search process can be and that candidates engage with us in good faith. We try our best to treat all applicants with equal speed and consideration of their qualifications. Most of our postings get hundreds of responses in the first days alone. We input tens of thousands of resumes each year.

This post will focus on tips for the initial follow-up phone call. In the future I will cover best practices for the possible phone interview. So how can you make the most out of any follow up contact? You have applied to a job you are very interested in. Common protocol dictates the next step is the follow up phone call. When should you make it? Read the rest of this entry »

Green Squirrels – The Philly Temps Difference

July 18th, 2013

There is a lot of talk in the employment sector about Purple Squirrels – the mythical perfect candidate. A Purple Squirrel has a resume illustrating skills and experience that aligns perfectly with the job or event staffing description, bullet point by bullet point. They have fantastic presentation. Their salary requirements are in line with what the company is looking to pay. In theory, this nearly mythical Purple Squirrel could immediately handle all the imagined responsibilities of any position without any training, seamlessly integrating the the culture of the office and being a loyal, long term employee.

Just saying, purple squirrels have been found in Pennsylvania

Much has been written about the Purple Squirrel conundrum – the excess of applicants in the job market and yet no one is ‘qualified’ for the vacant position. There are a lot of interesting articles out there trying to parse where the blame lies; the unrealistic expectation of those in charge of hiring, technical failings of HR software, the glut of applications to any position overwhelming the protracted hiring process, the psychological implications to your business of always hoping someone better is still out there. Despite this, every company still wants a Purple Squirrel. But what if a Green Squirrel is the answer?

Why Should Philadelphia Companies Use Temps? – Save Yourself Time and Stress

Good old stock photos of stressed office worker.

Your office is humming. There is work that needs to be done. Maybe it’s a small project that could use an extra pair of hands. Perhaps there is the need to expand with a new role, or replace an outgoing employee. Companies like yours may think that there is only one arduous way to find someone to do the work, often not considering the temporary placement option. There are so many reasons why using temporary or contingent employees makes sense, but the most obvious is that it saves businesses both time and stress. Read the rest of this entry »

How Job Seekers in Philadelphia Can Turn Temp into Perm

October 9th, 2012
Possibilities

When I interview potential Philly Temps employees, I always try to probe what sort of work are they open to? Because we do all length of assignments, I need talented people who are looking for different things. I need workers who only want part time, who are only available for a few months, who are happy to be on call but don’t want to commit to anything long-term. However, many candidates I speak with are firm in that they are only looking for permanent or guaranteed temp-to-perm opportunities. Frequently I am told in the interview not to bother to contact candidates for anything less than a month, or three month, or six month assignment. “It’s not worth my time” they tell me. Ok, I say, noting it in their file. Because we need people who are only looking to commit to a perm opportunity. And I listen to what they say they want. I don’t reach out to them when a short temp job comes in. And they lose out.

Here’s why: Read the rest of this entry »

Tips for Temps – Resume Red Flags

September 20th, 2012
Red Flags

Look at all these red flags

Because we staff and recruit for such a wide range of staffing candidates and positions I would say I am much more open to resumes than, say, someone who works in the HR department of a specific company or only recruits for one sort of position. I am always willing to give the candidate the benefit of the doubt and read between the lines of a resume. However, even I have some red flags that go up when reviewing applicants. Here are my top three red flags. Make sure your application is free of these and you’re more likely to make it through the initial screening process. Read the rest of this entry »
